Araceae. A tropical climbing aroid with aerial roots and large decorative foliage.

Native to tropical regions of Central America, where it climbs through warm, humid forest environments.

Young plants have simpler leaves. Mature plants produce larger leaves with splits and holes known as fenestrations.

Bright filtered light is best. Avoid harsh direct sun through hot windows, especially in summer. Water less often in cool periods.

Use a draining potting mix. Let the mix dry back partly before watering again. Long wet periods can encourage root rot and fungus gnats.

Feed lightly during active growth. Do not fertilise a stressed or soggy plant. Too much fertiliser can cause salt build-up.

Keep away from pets and children that may chew plants. Monstera contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals.
